COMPARED TO CAST MAGNESIUM, FORGED MAGNESIUM WHEELS ARE STRONGER

Forged magnesium wheels are in an entirely different category than other wheels. They have a higher specific strength value and toughness (ability to absorb energy) compared to other wheels. It is hardly surprising that, beyond Formula 1 and MotoGP teams, true-forged magnesium wheels are also selected by more mainstream car and motorcycle enthusiasts worldwide. They are approximately 20 percent lighter than cast magnesium wheels and are stronger than typical motorsports wheels.

IMPROVE BRAKING PERFORMANCE

As competition wheels are often subjected to speeds of over 300 km/hour, safety is the top priority. Magnesium wheels provide faster heat dissipation, ensuring peak performance of the brake system -- a critical factor for motorsports professionals. Excessive heat can be detrimental to tire lifecycle, brake pad life and braking performance. Magnesium alloys possess a higher specific heat capacity, meaning they can absorb more heat per unit of mass compared to other materials. This property, along with other clear advantages of magnesium, are well-recognized and appreciated by professionals and enthusiasts alike.

PROLONG THE SERVICE LIFE OF THE SUSPENSION SYSTEM

Magnesium wheels possess a higher damping factor, which results in a number of improvements, such as better absorption of vibrations, shocks, impacts and noise, thereby prolonging the service life of the suspension system. These features are important not only for race-wheel applications/uses, but also for mainstream driving comfort and improved fuel economy.

True-forged magnesium wheels are the very lightest motorsports-grade wheels in the industry, providing a number of benefits to a driver, which include:

- faster acceleration and reduced stopping/braking distance

- improved fuel efficiency and resulting CO2 emissions reduction

- tire longevity increase, and tire failure (rupture) risk minimization

- longer service life of brake pads and discs

FORGED MAGNESIUM WHEELS HELP FUEL ECONOMY, TOO.

Reduced fuel consumption of true-forged magnesium wheels has been indisputably verified. This is due to lower energy required to rotate a lighter true-forged wheel, weighing at least 40 percent less than a typical cast alloy wheel. In independent tests performed, as reported by Alcoa, a forged aluminium wheel repeatedly demonstrated an improvement of at least 3 percent in tire rolling resistance compared to a twice heavier steel wheel. This reduction in rolling resistance translates into fuel savings of at least 1%; or approximately 0.5% when a forged magnesium wheel is compared to a typical cast aluminium wheel, which is predominant nowadays. This does not take into account the factor of stop-and-go city driving, under which conditions the fuel savings effect is further expanded.

Impressive impact test results were recently obtained in respect of forged wheels. The Japanese JWL test simulated a truck hitting a high curb at a speed of 50 km/h. Interestingly, steel wheels that were tested actually resulted in excessive rim deformation and air loss in the tire. Testing cast aluminium wheels resulted in their fracture (failure). Whereas forged wheels passed the test successfully.

This evidence provides further support and substantiation in favor of designing ultra-lightweight wheels having higher stiffness than cast wheels, while being more crack-resistant. Higher mechanical properties of true-forged wheels including improved fatigue characteristics, which lead to improved reliability and longevity.
